The short answer

The best AI voice agent platform depends on who will build the agent. Developers wanting full control usually start with Vapi, Retell AI, LiveKit or Pipecat. Agencies look at Synthflow's white-label setup, and regulated enterprises look at Bland. Businesses without technical staff can skip the build with a managed service such as Calldone, which we make.

Key takeaways

  • A voice agent platform gives you the parts to build a phone agent; a managed service builds and runs one for you.
  • Vapi and the open-source frameworks suit developers, Retell AI pairs a visual builder with APIs, and Synthflow and Bland aim at agencies and enterprises.
  • Synthflow describes a full agency white-label setup, Bland lists reseller partner programs, and Vapi relies on third-party white-label dashboards.
  • Building your own agent means owning prompts, phone numbers, integrations, testing and weekly fixes.
  • Shortlist on telephony, the integrations each vendor names and languages, then call a demo agent yourself.

An AI voice agent platform is software you use to build, run and monitor phone agents that talk to callers in a natural voice. This guide compares the main options as of October 2026: Vapi, Retell AI, Synthflow, Bland AI, ElevenLabs and two open-source frameworks, sorted by who each one suits, how you build on it and what it connects to.

A disclosure first: we make Calldone, a managed service that competes with these platforms from the other side. They hand you the tools; we build and run the agent for you. Every competitor fact below comes from the vendor's own website or documentation, read on October 13, 2026, and listed in the sources. We left prices out on purpose, because they change often.

What is an AI voice agent platform?

An AI voice agent platform is a toolkit for building phone agents yourself. It combines speech recognition, a language model, a synthetic voice and telephony, and gives you a dashboard or an API to decide how the agent behaves. You write the instructions, connect phone numbers and business tools, test the result and keep improving it.

That makes a platform closer to a workshop than a receptionist: capable, and empty until someone builds on it. For the basics of the technology, read our explainer on what an AI voice agent is.

The platforms, one by one

Vapi

Vapi's homepage, as of October 2026, calls it "voice agents for builders" and "API-native by design." You pick the transcriber, model and voice from providers of your choosing, build in the dashboard or the API, and use Squads to pass a live call between specialized assistants. Best for: developers wiring voice into their own product. What to check: its pricing page says provider costs bill on top of Vapi's fee, its docs say free numbers take inbound calls only, and HIPAA handling is an optional add-on.

Retell AI

Retell AI's site, as of October 2026, describes a no-code studio where you "design every step of the conversation on a drag-and-drop canvas," next to APIs and SDKs. Its docs suggest starting with a single-prompt agent and moving to a conversation flow only when you need tighter control. Best for: teams wanting a visual builder and an API in one product. What to check: the per-minute cost is built from separate parts (model, voice, telephony, add-ons), and its homepage lists HIPAA, GDPR and ISO 27001 among the standards it says it meets.

Synthflow

Synthflow's homepage, as of October 2026, positions it as enterprise-ready voice AI with "in-house telephony." You design call logic in a visual Flow Designer, start from industry templates and test changes in a sandbox. Best for: agencies and larger teams that want a reseller model. What to check: its pricing page describes plans scoped around call volume, concurrency, telephony and integrations, so ask what applies at your size.

Bland AI

Bland's homepage, as of October 2026, calls it an "enterprise voice AI platform" for "high-stakes calls" and says it runs its own speech recognition, language model and voice rather than stitching vendors together. You build with Conversational Pathways, a node-based designer, or the REST API. Best for: regulated enterprises wanting one vendor for the whole stack. What to check: enterprise rollouts are projects with its forward-deployed engineers; the homepage says most production agents go live in two to six weeks.

ElevenLabs Agents

ElevenLabs, known for synthetic voices, sells an agent product its site calls ElevenAgents. As of October 2026 the page says you can set voice, language, knowledge and workflows without code, or use its SDKs and APIs, and it claims 90+ languages. Best for: teams where voice realism and language range come first. What to check: no white-label or reseller program is listed on its site.

LiveKit Agents and Pipecat (open source)

LiveKit describes Agents as "an open source framework and developer platform," with Python and Node.js quickstarts and SIP for phone calls. Pipecat, maintained by Daily, runs wherever Python runs; you self-host it or use Pipecat Cloud. Best for: engineering teams building voice into a product. What to check: you own everything, including the pager when a call drops at 2 a.m.

Calldone (the managed option)

Calldone is not a platform in this sense. After a short onboarding call, our team configures the agent, tunes its voice, connects your calendar or CRM and tests the flow with you before it answers a live call. You keep your number by forwarding calls, and every call returns a recording, transcript, summary and outcome. Best for: owner-operators who want the result, not a build project. What to check: that your call types and systems fit; plans are on our pricing page.

We also checked air.ai, a name that comes up in these searches. As of October 2026 that domain shows an enterprise readiness platform for defense and supply chain work rather than a phone agent product, so it is not in this list.

Which AI voice agent platforms offer white-label options?

Synthflow is the clearest white-label option in this group: as of October 2026 its agency page describes rebranding with your own logo and domain and managing clients in subaccounts with their own minute allowances. Bland lists reseller, technology and implementation partner programs. Vapi has no first-party white-label program on its site, but its docs list third-party dashboards, such as Vapify, that agencies run on top of it.

Retell AI lists solution and creator partner programs but not white-labeling. If you run an agency, ask each vendor who owns the client relationship, whether you set your own rates per subaccount, and what happens to client agents if you move platforms.

What does building your own voice agent involve?

Building on a platform means you, or someone you pay, take on six jobs a managed service would otherwise carry. For a developer that is a normal project; for a plumber or a practice manager it is a second job.

  1. Prompt and call logic. Greeting, questions, booking rules, upset callers and when to transfer. Our notes on prompts for voice agents show the detail involved.
  2. Components. On API-first platforms you pick speech-to-text, model and voice, and each choice shifts latency, accuracy and cost.
  3. Telephony. Buying or importing numbers, forwarding or SIP, and registering outbound caller ID so calls are not flagged as spam.
  4. Integrations. Connecting the calendar or CRM through webhooks or custom functions, and deciding what the agent says when an API is slow.
  5. Testing. Real scenarios: a bad cell line, a strong accent, someone asking for Saturday when you are closed.
  6. Monitoring. Reading transcripts weekly, fixing the prompt, re-testing, and watching for provider updates that change behavior.

When is a developer platform the better pick?

A developer platform is the better pick when voice is part of your product rather than a tool for your front desk. A software company adding calls to its app, an agency serving many clients, or a contact center with engineers on staff gets control no managed service offers. It fits when:

  • You need to choose or swap the model, voice or speech provider yourself.
  • You want agents defined in code and released through your own pipeline.
  • You resell agents to clients under your own brand.
  • You need self-hosted or on-premises deployment, which Bland and the open-source frameworks describe.

How to choose an AI voice agent platform

Start with who will build and maintain the agent, then narrow by fit:

  • No technical staff, you just want calls answered: a managed service. Our roundup of the best AI receptionists covers the ready-made options.
  • Developers who want full control: Vapi or Retell AI. Our Vapi vs Retell AI comparison goes feature by feature.
  • An agency reselling to clients: Synthflow's white-label setup or Bland's partner programs. Our list of Synthflow alternatives covers other routes.
  • A regulated enterprise wanting one vendor: Bland or an ElevenLabs enterprise plan. See our Bland AI alternatives for the rest of the field.
  • A team that wants to own the code: LiveKit Agents or Pipecat.

Whatever you shortlist, call a demo agent, interrupt it, ask for a person and read the logs. If Vapi is already on your list, our guide to Vapi alternatives weighs it against the others.

These platforms are good tools. The real question is whether you want a tool or a finished agent, and that usually comes down to who will still own it next month.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI voice agent platform?

There is no single best AI voice agent platform; it depends on who builds. Developers wanting control often start with Vapi or Retell AI, agencies look at Synthflow's white-label setup, regulated enterprises look at Bland, and engineers who want open source use LiveKit or Pipecat. Businesses without technical staff can skip the build with a managed service such as Calldone, which we make.

What is a white-label AI voice agent?

A white-label AI voice agent is one an agency builds on another company's platform and sells under its own brand, with its own logo, domain and billing. As of October 2026, Synthflow's agency page describes this setup with client subaccounts, and Vapi's docs list third-party white-label dashboards. Ask who owns client data and what happens if you change platforms.

Do I need to code to use an AI voice agent platform?

Not always. Retell AI, Synthflow, Bland and ElevenLabs describe visual or no-code builders, though connecting calendars, CRMs and phone systems often still needs webhooks or API work. Vapi, LiveKit and Pipecat lean toward developers. If nobody on your team wants to own that work, a managed service that builds and maintains the agent for you is the simpler path.

How are AI voice agent platforms priced?

Most publish usage-based pricing billed by the minute of call time, sometimes with model, voice and telephony charges added separately and paid tiers for more simultaneous calls. Enterprise plans are usually quoted by a sales team. Prices change often, so read each vendor's pricing page and work out your full cost per minute at the call volume you expect.

Can an AI voice agent platform use my existing phone number?

Usually, yes. Vapi, Retell AI, Synthflow and Bland all document ways to import numbers from carriers such as Twilio or to connect a SIP trunk, and several also sell numbers directly. With a managed service like Calldone, you keep your number and forward calls to the agent, and the team confirms your phone setup during onboarding.

Is a managed AI voice agent better than building one?

Neither is better in general. Building on a platform gives you control over models, code and branding, but you own the prompting, testing, monitoring and fixes. A managed service trades some of that control for a team that builds, tests and maintains the agent for you. Choose based on whether someone on your side will own the agent month after month.
